FOIA Requests: Keeping Government Honest

For our second session in MIP's Legal Training Series we will learn the art and science of submitting FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) Requests.

Have you ever wanted to know how often lobbyists and trade groups meet your elected officials? What about emails or police blotters about a protest you attended? Do you want the ability to peak behind the curtain to see what happens in government outside of public view? Journalists, activists and NGOs use Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA") requests as a tool to understand the inner workings of government, uncover corruption and malfeasance, and build the historical record. In addition to being an important tool for keeping government honest, FOIA requests are easier than you think. Come to our training on Aug. 7th and learn everything you need to know to submit a FOIA request of your own.

We will be discussing how to submit requests to federal and D.C. public agencies. Bring an idea of for government records you would like to request! (We'll help you print out a request you can mail, and if you are able to bring a laptop, we'll show you how to submit through the appropriate online portal).
