Space for Meetings and Events

The Movement Infrastructure Project has partnered with Petworth United Methodist Church to offer space for movement meetings, trainings and events. The space is located at 33 Grant Circle, NW.

The Space:

The First Floor

The main (first) floor of PUMC is a space that we share with the PUMC Congregation, SPACEs in Action and other partners. This space includes a sanctuary with auditorium style seating for about 300 people and a ‘church hall’ with an open floor plan that can fit about 150 people. Because it is a shared space and using that space requires coordination with our partners and prompt and thorough cleaning, we can only offer use of the downstairs space on a ‘case-by-case’ basis for high priority events.

Upstairs

The second floor of PUMC is the main Movement Infrastructure Project space. That includes an office with boardroom style seating for 12 people; a classroom/auditorium with auditorium style seating for 50 people; an art and production room for art builds and projects that could be messy; and a number of lounge-style areas for breakouts meetings. These spaces are not shared with the church congregation so we can be much more flexible with booking events in these areas.

Costs

The Movement Infrastructure Project doesn’t have any full time staff so opening the space, even for small meetings requires us to schedule an organizer to staff the space during your event. To help us cover those costs and cover rent and upgrades to the space we ask groups planning to use the space to make a financial contribution to use the space. The suggested contributions are offered on a sliding scale basis and the rates in the booking form reflect the TOP of the sliding scale.

  • If you’re an organization with more than 20 full-time staff we encourage you to contribute the amount listed.

  • If you’re a smaller grassroots organization with between 2 and 20 paid staff, we encourage you to contribute at least 85% of the amount listed.

  • If you’re a grassroots organization with no full time staff or just one paid organizer, we encourage you to contribute at least 65% of the amount listed.

To start the process of booking space for a meeting, training, or event at the Movement Infrastructure Project please use this interface. A Movement Infrastructure Project organizer will follow up with you as soon as possible to discuss your request and see if we can accommodate your event. Space requests are NOT confirmed until your request has been reviewed by a Movement Infrastructure Project organizer and you’ve signed a Space Use Agreement.

Request Shared Space Downstairs (Sanctuary and Church Hall)

NOTE: This space is shared with the PUMC Congregation and other partners. Using that space requires coordination with our partners and prompt and thorough cleaning so we can only offer use of the downstairs space on a ‘case-by-case’ basis for high priority events.

Space Use Agreements

We are working together to create and share resources that can unlock the potential of our movements. As we use and share those resources, we all take collective responsibility for stewarding those resources to ensure that they continue to be available for our movements. Our movement organizations are using the space at Petworth United Methodist Church in partnership with the church’s congregation and other community partners including SPACEs in Action.

To help steward this space we ask that each organization using the space agree to the following space use agreements.

  • Stay in the area assigned to your event and be mindful of how sound carries, especially in shared spaces. Most things said even at a normal speaking volume upstairs can be heard in the entryway, and anything said in the sanctuary is audible upstairs.

  • When using shared spaces like the restrooms, be prepared to say a friendly hello to visitors with other groups or church community members.

  • Please take note of any signs posted by the church caretakers and community, or any requests they make of you. If you have questions about a sign or request, ask your MIP coordinator.

  • Look out for low banisters and smooth steps. If you’re carrying anything, especially upstairs, get a spotter!

  • Be gentle with original fixtures such as sliding doors, wood surfaces, and windows. This includes not forcing “stuck” fixtures, watching out for windows when moving items around and cleaning up any spills promptly and thoroughly.

  • Please keep any crafts or art projects that have the potential to create a mess (ie. painting) in the Art and Production space.

  • When you’re done with the space, please return any tables, chairs, props, or other materials to where you found them. Unless you’ve made arrangements for storage at the MIP, please don’t leave anything behind. Items left behind without a specific agreement might be donated, recycled or removed from the space.

  • This space isn’t staffed continuously, so it’s likely that a Movement Infrastructure Project organizer is making a special trip to open the space and planning on leaving as soon as your event is over so please don’t arrive earlier or stay past the agreed upon times.

  • If anything is damaged, dirty or is not working, let us know so we can fix it for the next group.

  • If you have questions or concerns, or anyone else using the space has concerns, reach out to your coordinator from the Movement Infrastructure Project.

The main floor of Petworth United Methodist Church is a space that MIP shares with PUMC, SPACEs in Action and other partners. Because this is a shared space we work with a more extensive set of agreements.

  • If your event is taking place on the main floor of the church, you are welcome to use the Church Hall space or Kitchen for meals and snacks. Please make sure to keep food and uncovered drinks out of the Sanctuary. Alcoholic beverages are never allowed on the main floor of the church.

  • This space must be cleaned and returned to its original condition at the end of your event. This includes emptying trash and recycling, wiping down hard surfaces, sweeping hard floors and pews, and vacuuming carpets.

    • Groups using the space are responsible for making sure that all of your people and belongings are out of the space at the end of your event, trash and recycling are in appropriate bins, and that furniture is returned to its original location.

    • Movement Infrastructure Project organizers are responsible for sweeping floors, vacuuming carpets, wiping down hard surfaces and taking trash and recycling to dumpsters. But remember that these folks are volunteers so if you have capacity we invite you to offer to help.

  • This is a house of worship that has a special religious and cultural significance for our partners at Petworth United Methodist Church. Please respect our partners at PUMC by showing respect for this space that means so much to them.
